From his birthplace Noorvik, Alaska
(located on the banks of the Kobuk river) to the diverse list of
groups he has performed in, there is nothing ordinary about Sean
Kobuk. As friend and fellow musician Webale put it "His songs
are honest, carefully sculpted and digestable, drawing from rock,
pop, reggae and electronica."
Sean started his musical career in Jr High as a singer in his
schoolmates Ramones cover band. By high school Kobuk had taught
himself guitar and moved into the role of lead guitarist that he
would play in many future bands. While attending Hampshire college
Sean joined legendary country punk band Beatrice learning the tricks
of the songwriting trade from co-founders Matt Bosson and Sage Guyton.
Sean explored blues, funk and reggae as guitarist in Jambone, Public
Knowledge and Uproot and rewrote the score for a campus production
of Marat Sade with friend and current hollywood film scorer Chris
Anderson.
After college Kobuk moved to San Francisco and did a stint in seminal
queer punk band Fagbash before forming the heavy/melodic Bless and
Burn with brother Darren on drums. By this time Sean's songwriting
talent began to equal his skill as a guitarist and the subject matter
was often gut wrenchingly personal. Bless and Burn recorded a two
song demo with engineer Damien Rasmussen at Dancing Dog studio and
eventually landed a slot playing at the infamous Burning Man festival
in the Nevada desert before disbanding in 1998.
Sean relocated back to his hometown of Ithaca, NY. and began
writing more diverse material that blended rock, hip hop and electronica
with folk and country. Kobuk has been playing out as a solo acoustic
performer and recently performed with a full backup band at Musefest.
Kobuk also produced a three song demo for friend and
Musefest founder Way.
Sean Kobuk's first full length recording, Angels in the Rearview
Mirror, was released on I-Town records in December of 2004. Recorded
and Produced by Matt Saccuccimorano at Electric Wilburland the disc
features a who's who of Ithaca's best musicians including Saccuccimorano
on drums, Walt Lorenzut of Hubcap and Wingnut on bass and AJ Strauss
of the Sutras on piano and vocals. This CD marks the return of a
full band sound for Kobuk and melds high energy rock with introspective
indie folk.
